13 The Saggy Middle

God damn son-of-a-bitch! That asshole. How dare he? She was so angry, her stomach burned. Saying she needed a keeper then giving up right in the middle of the investigation when they had just started to make progress.

In just over a week they’d learned Murray had lost hundreds of thousands betting on the horses, but money was still being deposited into his bank from an unknown source (read criminal). They learned Tiffany and the Greaseball had some kind of scheme going that might—or might not—involve Fred, or Fred’s office, or maybe a secret code or some kind of password to something in Fred’s office. They learned Vanessa had a necklace she shouldn’t be able to afford. They learned…

Okay, so maybe they weren’t making spectacular progress. Maybe they were only making fair-to-middling progress.

All right, fine, she admitted it, maybe not even fair-to-middling progress since they didn’t know what any of it meant, but they made some progress.

Maybe the fact that Vanessa was able to afford a diamond necklace that was worth as much as her yearly alimony meant nothing, and maybe Murray had a good explanation for all the deposits in his bank but knowing Murray, probably not. And maybe Tiffany and the Greaseball were just blowing smoke out of their asses, and maybe there was a legitimate reason for Susan to have a gun in her bedroom. Lots of people had guns. It didn’t make them murderers.

Her heart hurt from the blow he dealt her.

She counted on Gabe to support her, and just when things got tough, he bailed. Clearly a trend. Not happy with his relationship with his father? Don’t speak to him for the next decade. Don’t want the responsibility of running a billion-dollar company? Walk away. Don’t like the idea of a relationship with a girl who adores you? Dump her.

Obviously, Gabe was a man not to be trusted. She thought she’d learned that eleven years ago but today just drove the point home.

She would never trust him again. Unfortunately, she still needed him. Okay, she didn’t actually need him. What she needed was Contessa and The Recipe, in no particular order. However, The Recipe was no good without Contessa, and in order to get Contessa, she needed Gabe. But, damn it, she didn’t want to need him.

Still, she felt terrible about saying she hated him because it wasn’t true. Sadly, she felt the opposite.

Aaaaghhhh! She was so confused.

The elevator reached her floor. She got off and opened the door to the apartment, then stopped.

They were here. In her apartment…okay, in her mother’s apartment but, really, who cared. The
